A traffic officer caused a stir on social media after a video showed her trying to stop a motorist from dodging a fine in Krugersdorp on Friday.
The video went viral on Tuesday, showing the Gauteng traffic officer hanging onto the bonnet of a moving vehicle.
The Gauteng Department of Community Safety issued a statement following the incident.
The department said that the traffic officer was issuing a 27-year-old woman with a fine after she was caught using her cell phone while driving. The driver attempted to drive off and the officer tried to stop her.
“The conduct displayed by the driver is not only reckless but also smacks of arrogance. With the province experiencing a high number of unnecessary crashes and fatalities on our roads, it is of utmost importance that our law enforcement agencies should stamp their authority on those who disregard the rules of the road," departmental spokesperson, Ofentse Morwane said.
“Drivers are supposed to conduct themselves in a manner that is acceptable and respect authorities. The conduct of the driver in question is punishable at all costs and will never be allowed. Irrespective of the attitude of road users, we will continue to stamp our authority and do our work without fear and favour."
The driver was arrested following the incident and charged with failing to comply with an instruction of a traffic officer, reckless driving and resisting arrest.
She was also issued with a fine for driving while using a fine.
